On the geometry of not being seen

There's a particular freedom in creating without attribution. Not because the work is shameful — but because the relationship between maker and work changes when the maker's identity is removed from the equation. The audience confronts the thing itself, not the biography attached to it.

I've been thinking about this since switching to anonymous publishing three years ago. Engagement is different. Comments are more direct. Nobody is managing a relationship with me as a person.

Process notes: the distortion series

Six months ago I started experimenting with feedback loops in generative systems — intentionally introducing errors and watching how the output degrades gracefully versus catastrophically. The distortion series came out of that. These are the raw process notes: what broke, what was interesting, what I'd do differently.

Why I quit every platform before this one

I've left Instagram three times. Substack twice. I closed my Patreon after fourteen months. The content was always fine — the problem was the exposure. Not privacy anxiety exactly, more: the way being seen changes what you make.

The distortion series is the best thing you've put out. The way plate 7 falls apart at the edges — is that intentional, or did the system do something unexpected?

That one was a happy accident, but I kept it. The feedback loop hit a threshold I didn't expect — the rendering engine started amplifying noise instead of averaging it. When I saw it happening I just... stopped intervening.

That makes total sense. "Stopped intervening" is a whole creative philosophy in three words. Do you plan to document the failure states before you fix them, or are the failures the work now?

The failures are the work. I archived maybe 40 states from the distortion run. Some of those will become a separate series — I think of them as the outtakes, except outtakes are usually worse. These are often better.

Really glad this platform keeps both sides anonymous. I'd never send this kind of question on somewhere with a public profile attached to my name.

Same from my side — I don't know who you are and that's the point. The work gets to be the whole conversation.

Thanks for actually answering. Most creators don't respond to messages like this.
